The state of Uttaranchal, the 27th state of India, was created on November 9, 2000, when it was separated from the state of Uttar Pradesh.
In January 2007, the new state changed its name to Uttarakhand, which translates to “Northern Region”, the old name for the region.
Since there are so many Hindu temples and pilgrimage sites spread out across the state, it is frequently referred to as the “Devbhumi” (literally, the “Land of the Gods”).
Every traveller can find something to enjoy in Uttrakhand, a magical land of mountains and mythology, stunning landscapes and exhilarating adventure, wellness and yoga.
It is separated into the Garhwal and Kumaon regions. Garhwal is bounded on the north by Tibet, on the east by Kumaon, on the south by Uttar Pradesh state, and on the northwest by Himachal Pradesh state.
There are 7 major districts in Garhwal region including Dehradun, Haridwar and Rudraprayag. Kumaon is bounded on the north by Tibet, on the east by Nepal, on the south by the state of Uttar Pradesh, and on the west by Garhwal.
Kumaon is home to a famous Indian Army regiment, the Kumaon Regiment. There are 6 major districts in Kumaon region including: Nainital, Almora, Bageshwar. Haridwar Kumbh Mela, one of the main Hindu pilgrimages, takes place in Uttarakhand.
