Gujarat - Jewel of the West
Known as the “Jewel of the West,” Gujarat boasts a rich heritage and is home to some of the most magnificent temples, iconic landmarks, and diverse wildlife.
Gujarat is a state along the western coast of India. Gujarat’s capital city is Gandhinagar, while its largest city is Ahmedabad.
The state encompasses 23 sites of the ancient Indus Valley Civilization (more than any other state).
The most important sites are Lothal (the world’s first dry dock), Dholavira (the fifth largest site); both UNESCO World Heritage sites and Gola Dhoro (where 5 uncommon seals were found).
Gujarati is the official language of the state.
Gujarat - The Main Tourist Attractions
Gujarat is the birthplace of Mahatma Gandhi, the father of the nation. Visitors to Gujarat can visit the Sabarmati Ashram, where Gandhi lived for over a decade
The state has long been known for its industrial prowess, particularly in sectors such as textiles, chemicals, and petrochemicals.
This state is home to some of India’s most iconic landmarks, including the world-renowned Statue of Unity, the tallest statue in the world.
This colossal statue of India’s founding father, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, stands at 182 meters tall, and has become a symbol of India’s unity.
It’s also home to some of the country’s most breathtaking scenery – from the Rann of Kutch, where you can witness the world’s largest salt desert, to the lush forests of the Gir National Park, which is home to the majestic Asiatic lions.
The Main Cuisine
One of Gujarat’s biggest claims to fame is its cuisine. The state is known for its delicious vegetarian dishes, such as Dhokla and Khandvi.
Rotli, bhakhari, thepala, rotlo, dal or kadhi, khichdi, bhat, and shak make up the classic thali. Chhundo and athanu, an Indian pickle, are used as condiments. Many Gujarati foods have a specific combination of sweetness, saltiness, and heat.
And no visit to Gujarat would be complete without trying out some of the state’s famous street food, such as Sev Puri and Khaman.
Art, Culture & Traditions
But beyond its impressive economic and natural offerings, it is also a cultural hub. The state has a rich heritage of art, music, and dance, with festivals celebrating everything from Navratri to the Kite Festival.
Gujarati folk traditions include raas-garba and bhavai. Bhavai is a folk theatre that honors Amba and functions as both entertainment and ceremony.
Gujarati people perform the raas-garba as a folk dance to commemorate Navratri. Dodhiyu, simple five, simple seven, popatiyu, trikoniya (a hand motion that creates the image of a triangle), lehree, tran taali, butterfly, hudo, two claps, and many more are among the various garba styles and steps.
One of the earliest types of garba is called sheri, in which all the women dance and sing while donning crimson patola saris.
It is also famous for its textiles, including the world-famous Patola Sarees, Bandhani, and Mashroo. These textiles are a true representation of the state’s rich art and culture.
But perhaps what truly sets this state apart is its sense of community. The people of Gujarat are warm, welcoming, and always ready to share their culture with visitors.
